Water Policy – overview
The WGGA Water Policy has been developed to guide the deliberations of the Australian winegrape sector relating to water rights, access, security, allocation and trade of water.
The Policy recognizes that access to irrigation water is essential to the commercial production of winegrapes in most winegrape growing regions of Australia.
This Policy has been developed in a time of change in the water debate, particularly in the Murray Darling Basin. It recognizes that the impact of changes in the security and availability of water for irrigation affects regional communities as well as irrigators themselves.
The Policy includes general principles around water access, ownership, trade and environmental flows, and makes specific statements with respect to:
- Farm dams;
- Ground water; and the
- Murray Darling Basin
